Lessons In Faith And Determination From Moving Up

SHARE

When I look back at my journey, from the quiet dust of Pella to the polished floors of South Africa’s finest lodges, one truth stands taller than all others: faith and determination can take you farther than any map.

Faith kept me alive when there was little else to hold onto. Determination carried me when my feet were too tired, my stomach too empty, and my heart too heavy. These two, faith and determination, were not gifts I found easily; they were lessons earned one hard day at a time.

Faith in the Unseen

In Pella, faith was more than a word we heard in church. It was the way we woke up every morning, believing there would be water in the bucket, food in the pot, and strength in our bodies. My grandmother often said, “Faith doesn’t need proof; it becomes proof.” As a child, I didn’t fully understand her words. But as I grew older, I realized she was teaching me something deeper: to trust in what isn’t visible, to believe in what hasn’t yet happened.

When I left Pella, I carried that lesson with me like a secret compass. Faith reminded me that no environment defines you, not the poverty you are born into, not the silence of classrooms that once ignored your voice. Faith whispered that even when the road feels endless, each step counts.

Determination: The Quiet Fire

If faith is the compass, determination is the fire that keeps it pointing north. Determination is what made me walk miles to school when the desert heat burned through my shoes. It’s what kept me studying under the dim light of a candle long after others had fallen asleep.

When I first entered the city, I thought I had made it. But the city had its own kind of deserts, competition, rejection, the sharp edges of exclusion. I met people who doubted me before they even knew me. Some smiled at me during the day but shut doors at night. That’s when I learned that determination doesn’t roar; sometimes it’s quiet, stubborn, and patient. It’s the voice that says, “Try again,” even when no one else believes you should.

The Two Working Together

Faith without determination is just a dream. Determination without faith is just a struggle. Together, they become purpose. Faith gives your fight meaning. Determination gives your belief motion.

When I began my career in hospitality, I was determined to learn everything, from polishing glasses to managing guests. Yet, there were moments when doubt would creep in, whispering that I didn’t belong in rooms where no one looked like me. In those moments, faith stepped in, reminding me of my grandmother’s voice and the dust of Pella beneath my feet.

What Moving Up Really Means

Moving Up isn’t just about changing your address or job title; it’s about growth from the inside out. It’s about carrying your roots with pride while reaching for new heights. Every chapter in my book is a reminder that faith and determination are not just words from sermons or self-help books. They are daily choices.

Some days, faith will lead, and determination will follow. Other days, determination will drag faith along. But as long as they walk together, you will always be moving forward.

A Message to You

If you’re reading this, wondering how to keep going, remember this: you don’t have to have everything figured out. You only need to take one more step in faith and one more breath of determination.

The world may not always see your struggle, but it will see your rise. Believe in what you carry inside you. That is where your true direction lies.

And if you want to journey deeper into these lessons, the struggles, and the triumphs that shaped my path, Moving Up will take you there. It’s more than my story; it’s a reflection of anyone who has ever dared to dream beyond their beginnings. Let it remind you that your next step forward could be your most powerful one yet.
