What It Means To Truly ‘move Up’ In Life

SHARE

People often think that moving up in life means having more—more money, more comfort, more success. But for me, moving up has never been just about climbing a ladder. It has always been about growing from within. It is about carrying your past with pride and walking toward the future with purpose.

When I look back at my journey from the dusty paths of Pella to the polished floors of South Africa’s luxury lodges, I see more than just a change in location. I see growth in spirit, in faith, and in understanding. The world around me changed, but the real movement happened inside me.

The Journey Begins with Humble Steps

In Pella, life was simple but not easy. We learned early how to make something out of very little. We shared what we had and celebrated small wins because we knew how hard they were to earn. I didn’t have much, but I had dreams that filled the sky.

Moving up began there, long before I ever left the village. It started the day I decided to believe that my story could be bigger than my circumstances. That belief was the first step upward.

More Than Success

When I arrived in the city, I thought success would be the answer to everything. I worked hard, studied, and gave every bit of myself to build a better life. And when I finally stood in the places I once only dreamed about, I realized something important: success without peace feels empty.

Moving up is not about being above others. It is about learning how to rise without losing your humility. It is about looking back and seeing how far you have come, not just how far you still have to go. Real growth is measured by how kind, grounded, and grateful you remain, even when life improves.

Carrying Your Past With You

For a long time, I believed I had to leave my past behind to move forward. I thought I needed to change the way I spoke, dressed, and even thought, to fit into a new world. But as the years went by, I realized that every piece of my past carried a lesson that shaped who I became.

The boy from Pella taught the man in the suit how to stay patient, humble, and thankful. He reminded me that strength is not about pretending everything is perfect but about standing tall even when it is not. To truly move up, you must carry your roots with pride. Your past is not something to escape from; it is something to rise from.

The True Meaning of Growth

Real growth is quiet. It happens in the moments no one sees—the late nights when you are studying or working, the mornings you wake up after failure and try again, the small acts of kindness you offer even when you are tired.

Moving up is not about being noticed. It is about becoming better. It is the courage to forgive, to keep learning, to help others rise with you. When you move up in life, you don’t just climb; you lift.

A Message from My Heart

Every person has their own version of Pella, a place where their story begins. Maybe your start was difficult, maybe it was painful, but that doesn’t define where you can go. What matters is the strength you find in moving forward. My journey taught me that you do not need to have everything to start moving up. You only need hope, effort, and faith that each step forward brings you closer to the life you deserve.

In Moving Up, I share this journey in full, the laughter, the pain, the lessons, and the transformation. It is more than my story; it is a mirror for anyone who has ever dreamed of a better life but didn’t know where to start. If you have ever wondered what it means to truly move up in life, I hope my book helps you see that the answer lies not in what you gain, but in who you become along the way.

So, wherever you are, take that next step. Your journey upward begins with believing that you can.
